The name 'sphinx' which means 'strangler' was first given by the Greeks to a fabulous creature which had the head of a woman and the body of a lion and the wings of a bird. The Great Sphinx is to the northeast of Chephren's Valley Temple in Egypt and was first constructed between 1417 and 1425 B.C., but was later restored in the 1980’s.
